The following types of licenses are available:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Building Contractor License (Class \u201cB\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residential Remodeling Contractor License (Class \u201cB-2\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specialty Contractor License (Class \u201cC\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>General Contractor License<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A general contractor license is required to perform any type of construction work. If you plan on completing any of the following tasks, then you must have a general contractor license:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building new structures from the ground up<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renovating or remodeling existing buildings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repairing roofs and other exterior structures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Installing pool decks or retaining walls<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General contractors are responsible for the entire project and must hire subcontractors to complete specific tasks. For example, if your job involves building a garage addition onto an existing house, you will need to find a skilled carpenter who can build the framing and other components that make up this structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Specialty Contractor License<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Speciality Contractor License in California \u2013 also known as a Class \u201cC\u201d license \u2013 is for specialized contractors working in specific trades in the construction industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you work as, or plan to work as, a professional in one of the following industries, you need a specialty contractor license:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plumbing\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrical work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boiler, hot-water heating and steam-fitting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulation and acoustical<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concrete<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drywall<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevator<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demolition<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masonry<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lathing and plastering<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refrigeration<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well drilling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welding<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is just a small sample of the types of specialized tradework that requires a Class C license \u2013 the CSLB has over 60 classifications of construction work that requires a Class C license!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In effect, you will need a Class C license if you are doing any work on a home where you are not a general contractor or engineer, or if you are doing any remodeling work. Any specialized construction trade requires you to have a Class C license.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How Do I Get A Class C Contractor&#8217;s License?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting your Class C Contractor\u2019s License from the CSLB is a straightforward process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must have 4 years experience in your specific line of work, pass the CSLB examinations, post your $25,000 Contractor\u2019s Bond and pay the fees associated with the Class C license.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you receive your license, you\u2019re now legally able to perform work in your trade on any job site, so long as you are performing only the type of work you are licensed to perform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When does my Class C Contractor\u2019s License expire?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like every other CSLB license, your Class C license will expire 2 years from the date of issuance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No need to worry about remembering to renew your license \u2013 the CSLB will send you a renewal reminder 60 days before your license is set to expire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need help getting your Class C license?
