You may even be a certified contractor in your former area of expertise. Heck, you might even be in a union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what if you\u2019re, for example, an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibew.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IBEW electrician<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who has, over the years, fallen into a more general contractor position? It\u2019s a common career path for many apprentice electricians \u2013 you start wiring systems and within a decade you\u2019re running your own business, hiring electricians to work for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that in mind, as a general contractor in California, can you perform electrical work? Can you say, \u201cOh, I\u2019ll take care of the electrical\u201d in a new building or a refurb or a commercial project? Whether or not the general contractor can perform their licensed trade on the same project they are gen conning for depends on a number of factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrical work, meanwhile, is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/contractorslicensingschools.com\/blog\/do-i-need-a-class-c-contractors-license\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Class C license<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a specialized field that involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems. We know that you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probably could<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do your own electrical work as a GC with a C-10 License, without anyone knowing. But can you face legal consequences for doing so?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, can you perform electrical work as a general contractor if you have a C-10 license? Or do you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have to subcontract out that work?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that California really doesn\u2019t care. If you are a Class B General Contractor <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you have a valid C-10 Electrical Contractor\u2019s License, you can choose whether you want to subcontract out the work or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IN short, if you are a C-10 licensed electrician, you are good to go!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pros and Cons of Subcontracting Electrical Work As A General Contractor<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, you might see the cost savings of doing your own electrical work as a general contractor \u2013 but that doesn\u2019t mean you should <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do electrical work on every project. Any C-10 license holder will be able to meet the qualifications of the client and deliver a final product that meets the standard set by the CSLB \u2013 or face the consequences.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Cons<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Costs. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, you\u2019ll save lots of money by not having to hire someone else to do work you can legally and professionally accomplish. You\u2019re not only adding money to your company\u2019s coffers, but you yourself are basically taking the wages you would have spent on hiring out.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Additional Expenses.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As a C-10 License holder, you may need to pay for extra things like educational programs, IBEW union dues or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/contractorslicensingschools.com\/blog\/electrical-contractors-insurance-do-you-need-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrical Contractors Insurance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Considering how dangerous electrical work can be, many of these expenses are unavoidable \u2013 and can add up quickly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Time and energy. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good electrical work requires care and precision \u2013 which usually means it&#8217;s incompatible with being a general contractor. In most cases, you simply will not have the time or energy to be physically wiring a 10-story apartment while also dealing with vendors, clients and employees (and the 10 million problems that follow).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, can a general contractor do electrical work in California? <\/span><b>The answer is yes \u2013 but only if that general contractor has a valid and up-to-date C-10 license<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality is, though, that in 99% of cases, you will want to hire out your electrical work to a trusted, CSLB-certified C-10 electrician. The reasons for that are manifold, but the one that always sticks out is that it is logistically impossible for all but the smallest projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re building a house or refurbishing the garage \u2013 then maybe you\u2019re good to do your own electrical work as a Class B gen con.
