First Off, What Is The CSLB Exam Like?<\/span><\/h2>\n

To California contractors, taking the CSLB exam is like taking the SAT or the LSAT or MCAT exam for prospective college students, lawyers or doctors \u2013 this long, arduous trial decides whether or not you\u2019ll be able to work as a contractor in California.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clocking in at around 200 questions and taking up to 4 hours, the CSLB exam is, by design, not a joke. It\u2019s meant to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to contractors and will test even the most seasoned construction expert if they\u2019re not prepared.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The CSLB requires most applicants to pass two examinations:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Trade Examination<\/b>: Tests your knowledge of your chosen license classification.<\/span>\n

    1. This can be either a Class A, Class B, <\/span>Class B-2<\/span><\/a>, or <\/span>specific Class C speciality license \u2013 like plumbing or electrical.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n

      Is It Possible to Skip the CSLB Exam?<\/span><\/h2>\n

      The short answer is <\/span>no<\/b>!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      The majority of applicants must score a 72% passing grade on both the CSLB Trade and Law and Business exams to obtain a contractor’s license in California.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

      However, there are a few exceptions and alternative paths to explore:<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. License Reciprocity Agreements<\/span><\/h3>\n

      California <\/span>has reciprocity agreements with Arizona, Nevada, and Utah for certain classifications<\/span><\/a>, allowing licensed contractors who currently hold a valid license from those states to bypass the Trade exam and only pass the Business and Law exam to get their California contractor license.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Contractors who qualify for the reciprocity agreement<\/span><\/a> still have to take the Business and Law exam, which covers \u2013 you guessed it \u2013 California-specific business and law.
