The CSLB is notorious for strict, well-defined guidelines on who can work on what type of job in the state as a construction contractor \u2013 and crossing the CSLB is a big no-no for construction workers in the state.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, who can work on solar panel jobs in California? In this article, we\u2019ll cover the basics of solar panel installation \u2013 including exactly who can install solar panels in the state, as per the CSLB.<\/p>\n<h2>License Classifications for Solar Work<\/h2>\n<h3>General Engineering and Building Contractors<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/contractorslicensingschools.com\/blog\/the-cslb-class-a-general-engineering-license-a-comprehensive-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>&#8220;A&#8221; \u2013 General Engineering Contractors:<\/strong><\/a> Engineers holding Class A General Engineering contractors licenses in the state are fully authorized to install solar energy systems, from start to finish. Class A contractor&#8217;s licenses are stunningly broad \u2013 check out our article on Class A contractors for more info.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/contractorslicensingschools.com\/blog\/what-does-it-take-to-get-a-general-contractor-license-in-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>&#8220;B&#8221; \u2013 General Building Contractors:<\/strong><\/a> The big kahuna Class B General Contractors license does cover solar energy systems installations \u2013 but only as part of a broader construction project involving two or more unrelated building trades.\n<ul>\n<li>For example, a general contractor can do solar panel installations if they are also performing plumbing and electrical work. But if they\u2019re only doing electrical work or plumbing work, they would not be allowed to do solar panel installs. Make sense? Not really, but that\u2019s the rules!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Specialized Solar and Related Contractors<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/contractorslicensingschools.com\/blog\/c-4-boiler-hot-water-heating-and-steam-fitting-contractor-a-comprehensive-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>C-4 \u2013 Boiler, Hot-Water Heating, and Steam Fitting Contractors:<\/strong><\/a> These Class C specialty contractors usually work on compressed water systems, but they are absolutely authorized to work on solar heating equipment as part of systems related to their classification.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/contractorslicensingschools.com\/blog\/the-c-10-electrical-contractors-license-a-comprehensive-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>C-10 \u2013 Electrical Contractors:<\/strong><\/a> As you might expect, sparkies can do work on solar panels, but only when solar projects involve energy generation, transmission, or utilization. C-46 contractors specialize in installing, modifying, maintaining, and repairing thermal and photovoltaic solar energy systems, so yeah, they can do it.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cslb.ca.gov\/about_us\/library\/licensing_classifications\/C-53_-_Swimming_Pool.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>C-53 \u2013 Swimming Pool Contractors:<\/strong><\/a> Oddly enough, swimming pool contractors have some ability to install solar panels, but only when it involves the simple installation of solar heating in swimming pool projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Solar Energy System Disclosure Document<\/h2>\n<p>Before finalizing the purchase, finance, or lease of a residential solar energy system, contractors must provide a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cslb.ca.gov\/resources\/contractors\/solardisclosuredoc.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Solar Energy System Disclosure Document.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is not optional \u2013 this is stipulated by the CSLB.
