SAN MARCOS \u2014 The Kelly Elementary School<\/a> construction-worker <\/a>heroes are going back to school, and the school is picking up the tab.<\/p>\n

Carlos Partida, Eddie Dominguez, Steven Kane<\/a>, Mario Contreras and Toby Wiest helped subdue Brendan Liam O\u2019Rourke, who is accused of opening fire at Kelly Elementary School in Carlsbad in October, wounding two second-grade girls. The workers chased after him after he stopped to reload. Partida knocked him to the ground with a truck and helped hold him until police arrived.<\/p>\n

Contreras suffered a broken hand when he punched O\u2019Rourke.<\/p>\n

Van Nuys<\/a>-based Contractors State License Services<\/a>, a private vocational school<\/a> in San Marcos, is giving $1,000 scholarships to each man. The scholarships will pay for the workers to take one course, such as for contractor\u2019s license examination <\/a>preparation, blue print reading <\/a>or contract estimating<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The school stepped in to offer the scholarships after learning about the heroics displayed by the workers, which garnered national attention. Days before the shooting, the school offered Victor Perez<\/a>, a Fresno<\/a> construction<\/a> worker who rescued an 8-year-old girl who had been kidnapped, a similar scholarship.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were kind of on a hero thing,\u201d Cyndi Beaver, the school\u2019s marketing coordinator, said Thursday during a ceremony. \u201cWe just wanted to acknowledge our heroes in the construction industry<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The timing of the scholarships couldn\u2019t have been better, the men said. They are all currently unemployed. For most of them, the contract at Kelly Elementary<\/a>, a renovation of the school\u2019s kitchen, was their last job.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking,\u201d Partida said. \u201cThere\u2019s just not much out there right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Four of the five men said they would use the scholarship to get their Class B<\/a> state contractor\u2019s license<\/a>, which would enable them to find more work or potentially start a business themselves.<\/p>\n

The men say they have been overwhelmed by the adulation they have received.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe still get the \u2018you\u2019re a hero\u2019 response,\u201d Kane said. \u201cIt\u2019s been really nice.\u201d<\/p>\n
